I finally got to the point that figured I knew how to make android reasonably secure, so after quite a bit or research I bought a refurb LG G4 H811 (T-Mobile) phone on Ebay for about $170. The screen is spotless, 3 gb ram and 23gb available on the sd card - plus an external sd card and a replaceable battery. I flashed Cyanogen 13, pico gapps, su and xposed, the cpu is very fast, and I'm a happy camper. One oddity is that Disconnect - the vpn I use - does not work with US servers, but it works well and fast using German or European servers. They (Disconnect) are investigating. I have only had the phone for a few weeks, but I realy like it except for one "feature". It's really hard to answer the phone! You have to get the phone icon on the screen and swipe it to the right. I can't do this with one hand. But updating is very simple, as you just download the Cyanogen updates, and TWRP flashes the update on its own. I only had to reflash su and xposed manually. Pretty neat!

Flashing TWRP was a chore, as only my Win 10 micro would handle adb and fastboot - I tried other pcs for a week with no success.

Sero 7 Help / GPS Won't Shut Off - Draining Battery
« on: March 23, 2016, 04:36:33 PM »
So I have Location set to off, and prior to that set location to wifi only. Still, my GPS won't shut off. I'm running Dopa 5.1. Rebooting has no effect. This began a week or so ago, and I can't see a reason for it. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thx,

I like this one a lot, it's available at gp. A pretty complete keyboard, with a real shift key.

Sero 7 Apps / Disconnect VPN - 3 Devices $50/year
« on: June 05, 2015, 01:15:23 PM »
There was a news story yesterday about an app that Google refuses to list in the Play Store. It's Disconnect vpn
( https://disconnect.me/ ) which advertises that it removes all trackers, malware, etc. etc. and provides a vpn for up to 3 devices for $5 a month or $50 a year. You have to download the vpn software for each device, and it works for Windows and Android (and I believe other platforms as welll). The vendor is taking Google to court, and Google says it does not want to sell a product that prevents vendors of other apps from stealing your data. (OK, not exactly what they said, but that's what they meant.)

Sorry - it's really 3 devices, my mistake.

Sero 7 Help / Can't Restore Nandroid, System Error
« on: May 27, 2015, 03:32:01 PM »
Good thing I have 2 Seros. After setting up my test Sero with Dopa 5.1, Xposed and Xprivacy I decided to install Dopa 5.1 on my main Sero. Since I was running Liquidsmooth, I thought I had done a Nandroid backup in preparation last month. But apparently I did not, or for some reason, it did not complete. The latest I have is from last year. So I tried to restore from that backup, using Philz, so I could bring that up to date, then install 5.1 and recover apps and data. The problem is that (even though I had formatted /system)  every time I try to restore, I get an error on restoring /system.

I'll try to reinstall 5.1 (no problem there) and selectively restore apps and data using Philz. But I wonder if anyone else has run into this?

Thx,

It's still an alpha version, been up a week:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/super-alpha-posted-permission-xposed-t3072979 - (but I installed and so far, it works just fine.)

I installed Dopa 5.1 final first, or course. Can't tell any difference yet, except that "about tablet" identifies the OS as 5.1. Thank you, Dolores Park!! I just installed over 5.0v1. Nice!!  And I don't seem to need gapps installed.

Xprivacy for 5.1 is in alpha, testers only right now.

Sero 7 Android OS / Security Warning
« on: May 07, 2015, 01:36:14 PM »
The following appeared in today's issue of Windows Secrets:

"Webroot reports more startling threat data

Webroot, a well-respected cyber-security company, released its 2015 Threat Brief (site) at RSA. It states, among other things, that 85,000 new malicious IPs are launched every day. And the top phishing targets are technology companies and financial institutions. The report breaks down the latest cyber-threat trends, based on information provided by tens of millions of users and over 30 security-technology partners. It also states that collective threat intelligence is the only way to successfully fight cyber crime.

The key findings from the report include:
"On average, only 28 percent of apps on the Android platform were trustworthy or benign, [a decline of] 52 percent from 2013. Nearly 50 percent were moderate or suspicious, and over 22 percent were unwanted or malicious. Trojans make up the vast majority of malicious threats.

The report also stated that the U.S. hosts the most phishing sites and the largest percentage of malicious IP addresses, by country. Obviously, we in the States have some work to do."

This why it is imperative to use Xposed Installer/Xprivacy and/or App Settings.  You need to be rooted to do this.

There are a number of memory leaks in versions of Lollipop earlier than 5.1 (and some remain). If you are running an earlier version, as I am, you will want to stop the ColorFade memory leak. You can do that here:
