Sero 8 General Discussions / miracast?
« on: July 17, 2014, 09:16:26 AM »
There is a setting labeled Cast, when I press it it says no device available. I'm wondering if this is some sort of miracast or wireless video. This usually requires wifi direct and I don't see any way to turn on wifi direct. Maybe the Cast selection does it all in one operation. I'll do some experimenting tomorrow.

Sero 8 General Discussions / 1.6 or 1.4 processor?
« on: July 11, 2014, 11:45:21 AM »
There seems to be some confli Ting info about the sero8 processor speed. Some sifesare reporting 1.6GHz while Hisense says 1.4ghz.  Thisconfusion seems to stem from the processors number RK3188 t. The t is important here. While the rk3188 is indeed 1.6 the t is slower (and cheaper) at 1.4. Still fast enough for the average tablet user.

Sero 8 General Discussions / Sero 8 review
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:59:27 AM »
Ibought my wife a new Sero 8 today, her Samsung was pretty dated.

We've only had it a few hours so this review will be mode of a first impressions sort of thing.

Externally it looks similar to the 7 Pro. Some notable differences

Single speaker  vs dual speakers (7 pro)
8 has thinner Bezels than the 7 pro
8 has no hdmi port
8 sd card slot has no cover
8 rear camera has no flash

The display is 8 inch vs 7 inches (duh). Resolution remains the same. The quality of the display seems very bright and vibrant. As time allows I will be doing a side by side screen comparison.

The screen shot button on the 7 pro is missing from the 8.

The kitkat OS seems pdetty vanilla with the exception of the walmart, sams club and vudu apps prsinstalled. All three could be deleted. There is no stock file manager so I installed es3 file explorer. So far it works great. At first glance there appears to be no stock browser (no icon in app drawer). There iz a google search bar at the too of the screen.  Once you enter search keywords and press enter the browser opens up and you can adjust settings via pulldown menu. I have yet to find a direct access method for the browser.

I did not test the stock video player. I installed mxplayer. Mxplayed works great. The speaker is on the quiet side. My wife was working in the kitchen (i was sitting at the table) and I could just hear the movis soundtrack (admittedly my hearing isnt what it once was).

The wifi was trouble free and connected very fast. I tested it with my phone hotspot and my wifi router. Range seemed good as the router is upstairs at the other end of the house. I streamed two seperate movies from my WD live and Plex media server on my laptop with no problems. I found no evidence of wifi direct. I have not tezted bluetooth yet.

I will be doing more comprehensive testing as time allows. If you have any specific questions I will be glad to answer them or do a test to defermine the answer.

The Lounge- Off Topic Forum / Windows * and Plex Media Server
« on: February 26, 2014, 02:22:04 PM »
I am having trouble watching the movies stored on my Plex media server on my Windows 8 tablet.  All movies play fine on my TVs, Blu ray players, WD Live box, and all my Android devices (using bubbleupnp app).

Anybody get this to work?

The media server shows up in Windows 8 File Explorer, I can open the folders and see the individual movies but they wont play.  If I right click them and choose "play" or "open with" i get another window that displays a graph showing the transfer speed and percentage of completion but it never gets past 99%.

VLC 2.0.8 doesnt see the server.  VLC 2.1.1 crashes when i select Local Network>Universal Plug Play.

Ive tried so many different things but nothing seems to work.  The server itself is a Windows Vista laptop, if I use WMP11 as the server software then it seems to work on my Win8 tablet but WMP11 only supports a very narrow range of file types thus the reason I switched to Plex and up to this point it has worked great.

HELP! Any ideas?

The Lounge- Off Topic Forum / Strange SD card behavior
« on: January 28, 2014, 08:32:53 AM »
This morning when I picked up my phone it was telling me my SD card was blank. Restarting the phone didn't help. Reinserting the card didn't help. When I put the card in my laptop card slot it didn't even show up. I put the card back in the phone and as a last resort I reformatted the card. After the format (which didn't take as long as I thought it should). The phone then scanned the card for media and everything was still there, every file intact.  ??? I don't have clue what happened.

Sero 7 General Discussions / Same crap, different day

I saw a video spot on the news this morning about the "best" tablets.  Guess what they said?

Kindle HDX, Nexus 7 (2013), iPad Air, Microsoft Surface. No wonder they sell so well, the media keeps churning out the same uninformed, unresearched garbage year after year and all the sheep keep following their "advice".

Sero 7 Pro Accessories / Screen protector search is over!!
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:20:46 AM »
I have used quite a few screen protectors over the years and so has my son. They all do their job well and I have been pleased with their performance. What seperates them is cost and ease of install. The cost ranges from a few dollars to more than twenty dollars. The very expensive ones were a total waste of money as nothing set them apart from the others. Most if not all were difficult to install.

That brings me to the illumishield. Based on some reviews here I thought I would try the illumishield. I just finished installing one on two different tablets. The first one went on very easily. It had a few bubbles which much to my surprise were very simple to push to the edge. The install went so easy I decided to order one for my Dell Windows tablet too. Thinking the first install was a fluke and I just got lucky I didn't really expect the second one to go as well, but it did. The few bubbles it ended up with push out with little effort.

I did the install in a slightly steamy bathroom in an effort to keep airborne dust to a minimum. I used the included microfiber cloth to remove any dust, carefully removed backing, made absolutely sure to not touch the adhesive side, lined up the sheet, laid it down slowly on the screen, wrapped the included squeegee in the microfiber cloth and pressed out the bubbles. Fantastic.

I'm not sure how well it will perform long term but right now I have decided to never buy anything else. This was by far the easiest amd most successful install I have ever experienced. This is also one of the cheapest I have ever bought.

If you're still looking try this one out.

Sero 7 Buying, Ordering and Shipping / Still $129
« on: November 24, 2013, 04:35:24 AM »
I know the website lists the Sero pro for $149 but I had my wife scan one today and it came yo $129. They are also still running the video ad on the demo TVs that say $129. Might be worth checking your local Walmart (if you have one) before buying a refurb.

Sero 7 Apps / wifi file transfer
« on: November 23, 2013, 05:45:30 AM »
I havent had any luck using ES file explorer to transfer files between my tablets/phones and my pcs.  I select LAN>menu>scan but it never finds my wireless home network.

I found an app on the Play Store called WifiFile Transfer. I installed and tested it, works great. When you open the app on your device there is a start button displayed, you press the button and it displays an ip address, type that address into your pc browser and youll see a web ui displaying the contents of your Android device (no internet required). You con download files from your device to your your pc or you can upload from your pc to your device. Pro version is only $1.40

The Lounge- Off Topic Forum / The Kennedy mystique?
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:19:39 AM »
What made JFK such a notable person? I was only 7 when he was shot so obviously not old enough to be familiar with his career. He has been idolized for decades and I'm at a loss to why. I know most everyone here weren't even alive during his term as President but do we have any history buffs?
