Hi all! I'm Holly. I'm new to Sero7Forum.

I need some help here badly! Let me tell you a little story first then I'll tell you what I need. I'm sorry for the length but I'm bad at being brief. I'll do my best though!

I have a neighbor who's a close friend with 2 daughters who come to my apt to play games, watch stuff, etc. The older daughter, Jamie, who just turned 11 yrs old on Aug 12, is the closest with me... spends a lot of time with me.

Well, after this little girl spent 7 months taking perfect care of her tablet, I (a 45 yr old woman) accidentally dropped and shattered the screen on her $50 Amazon Fire Christmas Gift from her Grandmother. So I decided to get her a new tablet. I've never even had one myself. I've never rooted a tablet/device or done anything like that. The only portable devices I have are my PSP and my Tracfone smartphone (which isn't rootable).

List of things I need help doing, please:
- How to transfer as much of her important saved info from her Fire to the Sero as possible.
- How to transfer her Minecraft saves and world fully if possible. (I know I'm going to have to repurchase the app)
(Minecraft is EVERYTHING to that girl!!)
- How to update the device's O.S. (? - I think I've seen discussion here that Hisense did upgrade the OS?)
- How to root the Sero in VERY VERY simple terms for doofuses so I do NOT screw up her new tablet!!
- And do I update the tablet BEFORE rooting or after?
- And any other things I should do to/with the tablet and that I should know?
- (And in what ORDER do I do each thing if there's any specific order I should pay attention to!)

If poss, please please try to make this as easy and anxiety free as you can. I'm already procrastinating on this and poor Jamz is having to wait for her tablet because of my fear. (anxiety disorder sucks. *sigh* I've been cleaning the house for days to avoid this! ack! but I do want to get this done for her!)

She has a 32GB SD card that I bought her a while back.  And after reading one of the posts on here, I went ahead and bought a microUSB to USB OTG card reader & transfer accessory.  I hope those things will help in what needs to be done.

If you need ANY info from me, please just let me know!  (also, yes I have the ability to use my desktop computer/external TB HDD's as a layover for info transfers if needed)

Thank you all for any help you can give and I'm SO happy to be here!   :D

Holly

Another couple of quick questions. In another post, Laura replied:

Yes,  you will need to be rooth and yes I rooted my tablet within an hour or two of ownership.  I am using the. DoPa v2.0 custom rom.

In my opinion, you are missing out on way too many features when you're not rooted,  ....

I'm wondering what types of benefits and features specifically can you gain from being rooted. I know you couldn't possibly list ALL of them, but just some major ones that come to mind. One that I know of that I LOVE is being able to uninstall the pre-installed software that you don't need. What else?

ALSO, and this seems to be very important: How do you go about making a "Nandroid"?  (which I believe is the name for a full backup of your device's system? Eh?

Hi Holly,
You will find directions to root and install a custom ROM in the "Root, Hack Mod and Development" forum (if you have not already been there). If yu value your privacy, only when rooted can you control every aspect of what an app can do using the Xposed Framework and Xprivacy (there are other modules that can help with this). You can control if apps have access to the internet very easily with AFWall+. You can control which apps start up automatically - very useful, since your RAM is limited. You can access every app installed, including system apps. You can use the terminal emulator go get into the nitty-gritty of the system. With 5.x, you can automatically have most apps and their data stored on the SD card rather than in internal storage. And that is just scratching the surface.

Oh my goodness, shneor, thank you so much for replying! I wasn't sure anyone ever would since it's been so long. I've had this poor little girl's tablet sitting over here on my table for ever since just after her birthday and she's still using her old cracked one!

I don't really understand what ROMs are or what ROOTing is about or how it works. I don't understand the language of it. When people talk about it, it doesn't make ANY sense to me at all! I feel like I've wandered into a cafe where people speak another language and I wish I had taken the class before I went there, but I didn't and instead I'm just sitting in there and staring at people like a moron and asking them "So what language is that and where can I learn it?" and they tell me in THEIR language and it makes NO sense!  *ROFL*

Isn't that the silliest thing? I'm a dork. So, I guess a better question I should ask FIRST is... do you guys have a good guide on "What are ROMs?" and "All about Rooting?" or something like that? And any topic I need to know related to those would be helpful because I'm BRAND NEW to tablets! I've never owned a tablet at all myself. *rofl* But I'm probably going to get a Sero 7 Pro myself as well as soon as I can afford it.

Thank you again! I really appreciate it!  =)  And I'm sorry for my ineptitude.

(oh, and I will be sure to come back to your above post after learning about ROMs and Rooting too!)

Anjalena,
Here's a thread about rooting:
http://sero7forum.com/sero-7-root-hack-mod-and-development/rooting-is-it-necessary-and-what-does-it-do/

The ROM (Read Only Memory) contains the operating system software which runs your device. Rooting makes changes to this.  Sorry to take so long getting back to you, I'll try to check the forum more often. Please let me know ifyu have more questions. "Lucky Me" has posted very specific directions on how to root and install various custom ROMs, and her guides are detailed and excellent, and you'll find them in the forum.
