Broken USB port :(
« on: August 17, 2015, 12:00:42 AM »
I think the USB port on my Sero 7 is no longer working, no USB cord I plug in registers as charging or connected in any way.  I'm not really sure what happened, I bought a universal charger that was rated for 2.1 amps instead of 2.0, could that have burned it out?

I'm not very good at soldering or anything but is it possible to solder a new USB connector on?  I'm worried I burned something out though.

Hi.  I doubt it got burned up. I've charged my sero with any charging cord I can find that fits. I've even used a super charger , if cables could do that my tablet would be burnt toast by now. There's some kind of regulating that takes place in them now. That's what I read.

The sero's port is a major issue. Thousands of these tablets had portmissues, so it wouldn't surprise me.  Many have fixed them themselves, but if it's the port, soldering will be involved. ... Sorry..

There is some info regarding it. Check these links. ( soldering is a banned word from this forum, lol... No not really....)

Ahh sad news, and after I got it rooted and everything.  Maybe the USB port connection being bad had something to do with why I couldn't transfer files without corrupting the checksum :/

Anyway I took it all apart and borrowed a multimeter. I'm not really sure which leads I was supposed to check on the USB port, but just trying to place the terminals on what I assume are the USB connection leads didn't register anything on the meter, and neither did putting the terminals on the two little copper circles on the back of the circuit board behind the USB connector.  So it seems that it's disconnected there...

Do they use actual solder or just glue it with flux?  I tried putting my soldering iron on the copper points behind the connector hoping maybe it would heat it up enough to melt the solder and reconnect things...  No dice, didn't even get hot.

Is there even a remote chance of finding someone that does this type of repair work?  Some pretty smalll electronics.  I get the feeling I'm just going to have to get a new tablet :/

soldering....  I've said it before and I'll say it again...   WAH!   :'(

don't put the actual soldering iron on the board. It can get too hot and ruin it, somewhat fast and easily I am told...   Here's a good night story for you... something to read later..  http://sero7forum.com/sero-7-general-discussions/wireless-charging/90/

the really skinny solder is the best.  It won't get to globby.  (that's a technical term by the way)  and if it does get too globby, it might touch something in addition to the spot it's suppose to touch.  That wouldn't be good...

I couldn't master the art.  Couldn't get that globby stuff to stick to my board no matter what!  I was defeated, a broken woman..

but others did it and so can you.  maybe.

Cell phone repair shops might be able to do it. But they will most likely say it will cost more than the tablet is worth.. but that's cause most of those guys don't have a Sero and never used one!  or they wouldn't say that!  ;D

A technical college with small electronics repair might do it for you.

Yeah I saw someone online saying they could do it but I think they said $75, and I could get one off eBay for that cost...

I wonder if there's a way to just charge the battery pack directly? Then again that wouldn't be very convenient.

Right now it's all tore down and I don't really have the motivation to put it back together since it won't work anyway lol

Well the local guy said he would charge $45, $55 if it needed a new port ( so undoubtedly it will end up being 55 ).  I guess that's still cheaper than buying another used one off of the bay, plus I won't have to worry about if it gets here or if the screen is cracked or whatever.

I was just getting use to the idea of just getting a ZenPad...

heck, two tablets??  no sweat... at one time I had 9.  lol.  oh wait.. I think I have 7 now..  ::)

but on a serious note..is the Sero worth fixing?  ABSOLUTELY, imo.  It has a ton of features- few tablets will have them all.  And development too!  Not many devices have a dedicated developer like we do, you can put money on that.

Well I took it in to a local repair shop and he tested it and said the USB port was working so not really sure what's going on.  He asked if he could try charging the battery manually overnight and then take a look at it.  No word yet I'm probably going to call today to see what's going on with that.  In the meantime, my friend that sold it to me in the first place gave me a second one for free, I guess her and her boyfriend both had one or something.  This one is a little weird though, something wrong with the way it charges, at first if you plugged the USB cord in the thing would reboot and start charging, though after instlaling DOPA that's fixed but I can't plug the USB cord in with the phone powered off and have it charge.  But anyway supposing the other one actually gets fixed i guess I will have two lol

Well the repair worked for a while but then soon after that part died too. The guy at the shop just tried swapping in a different motherboard.

The data connection on my other Sero just went out too. Lucky it still charges.

I am thinking about just buying a used one from eBay soon.

I'm waiting on delivery of S7P number 5. I bought it on eBay for $18.50 plus shipping. Less than $30 total. It has a bad charge port but supposed to be great otherwise. I soldered in my first charge port a week or two ago. Didn't have the right solder so I'll have to rework it when I get my solder paste.

Yeah I would like to learn how to do that as well instead of just going through them.
