Is it possible to disable auto screen-dimming without rooting?

If the rom supports that feature ( can't remember if it's available in the stock rom) it will be in settings > display. I don't think root has anything to do with it.

The option is available in lollipop on the Sero7 pro.

Some roms have the option, some don't.

First, thanks for the answer, however as far as I know, all Sero 7 Tablets run Android 4.2.1 (Jelly Bean) with no access to update the OS.

Display info shows dimming times only between 15 seconds to 30 minutes.

you're welcome.   and you're right, hisense has left us high and dry.  But you have been misinformed regarding the available operating systems available to our little gem.

We have an awesome dedicated developer that has keep us up to date.  And yes, lollipop is available to our tablet, thanks to dolorespark.

poke around the site and you'll find all kinds of stuff available....

I assume upgrading from 4.2.1 to 5 (Lollypop), or even just to 4.2.2, would require rooting, in which case I need to build up courage to attempt, so I purchased a second Sero 7 for a root attempt.

Since there are many sources for rooting information, do you have a preferred source you can recommend?

On another subject, can you offer any advice on how to install apps that have been backed up by Google, onto my second Sero 7?

Again, thank you so much for assisting with these issues—

PS.  We are talking the Sero7 PRO? correct?  Because this only applies to the pro.  NOT the sero 7 lt.

Hi Carnig.  Yes, you are correct, you will need root and a custom recovery to upgrade your OS.

The original thread for this is here Post#2:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470998

my tutorial regarding the package - if you need it - is here:

http://sero7forum.com/sero-7-root-hack-mod-and-development/rooting-step-by-step-picture-guide/

read them both.  A few times.  Before  you attempt it.  One note: it's not as hard as it sounds.  It's mostly intimidating.

Ask as many questions as you want, as many times as you want, before you attempt it.  No problem.  keep asking until you're confident.  ask the same question over and over, I'll answer it again and again.  It's ok.

after you have root and your recovery you can make a nandroid - aka full backup.  It's imperative you have a full backup, in case something goes wrong, before you flash a rom.  I have a tutorial for that too.  If you use philz recovery it will look a little different from the photos in my tutorial, but the procedure is almost the same.  You should be able to do it following my tutorial for ClockworkMod recovery.  (CWM).

http://sero7forum.com/sero-7-root-hack-mod-and-development/nandroid-backups-with-cwm/

Then you can flash a rom.   ;D  I can help you with that too, if you need it.

for backup and restore with google....Per google help guide:

Restore your data and settings using Android Backup Service

When you add your Google account to a device, the data that you previously backed up for that Google account is restored to the device.

Learn what data and settings are restored
Google Calendar settings
Wi-Fi networks & passwords
Home screen wallpapers
Gmail settings
Apps installed through Google Play (backed up on the Play Store app)
Display settings (Brightness & Sleep)
Language & Input settings
Date & Time
Third-party app settings & data (varies by app)
Automatically restore app settings

You can choose to restore app settings when you reinstall an app on your device. This feature requires that you have already backed up your data with your Google account and that the app also uses the backup service. Some apps may not back up and restore all data.

Steps to restore app settings on your device
Open your device's Settings menu.
Under "Personal," touch Backup & restore.
Check the box next to "Automatic restore."

Good luck.  Let us know how it goes  :D

Thanks for that comprehensive reply— impressive and much appreciated.

Will study your post, then may come back if I need clarification, if that's OK.
