Sero7Pro hangs on Recovery screen
« on: March 21, 2015, 05:33:10 PM »
I cannot boot my Sero 7 Pro into Recovery at all. Not from ClockworkMod, power+vol down, or factory reset. It goes to the RECOVERY screen and hangs forever. I also can not get to it via adb.  I really just want to wipe it and install a new ROM.

I can't even recall which ROM is installed (it thinks it's a Nexus 7, Android v4.2.1 = Kernel 3.1.10 = Build Number P756.6.02.11.00).
Neither ClockworkMod or TWRP will boot recovery.

Any ideas? TIA

Hi.  you can't boot to recovery.  You didn't say, but by the sounds of what you are saying you are rooted. (?)  Can you power the tablet to the lockscreen or home screen?

If you can power it up to the homescreen go to settings and perform a factory reset, then try quick boot or something similar to get into recovery.  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot&hl=en

if that doesn't work make sure USB debugging is on, and re run the root package.  It will install the recovery again and possibly get you back up and able to flash. POSSIBLY.  Please make note it will be an older version of CWM and you'll need to update it.  Links to update it are in the tutorial.  (don't worry about re running root, it will skip over it if you don't need it)

But,  My guess is that USB debugging is not on, and that's why ADB won't work.  If it's not on it's going to be tough to get it resolved.  But give it a try anyway.

let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your reply. I totally forgot about this post!

Yes, it is rooted. I can power the tablet and use it. Factory reset has no effect. It doesn't wipe any data.

Quick boot is installed. QB to Recovery hangs, QB to Fastboot hangs.

USB debugging is on and still can not connect via ADB.

UPDATE: I ran through the paces to re-root and install CWM and it worked. Connected via adb and I can boot to recovery again. :)

Hi Laura,

I posted quite awhile ago regarding another's post about buying the same sero7 tablet and getting xboxtra to use the phone to somehow get the working tablet to get the recovery.img file into the non working tablet. You emailed me saying that wasn't necessary now as the stock .img file was now obtainable. I just come up against a brick wall, when nothing works no matter what trying adb or fastboot neither is able to show my sero7 with the device command. I downloaded sdk, and minimal adb and fastboot, have tried toolkits, tried to use nexus alternatives but so far am still at square one.Are there other things to try.The tablet will show one of these:the hisense name, recovery with the msg boot failed, and either a red or  a blue battery image. I keep it charged and at night it turns  itself on at times but stays at the hisense screen.Bummer.
Thanks, Wendy

Hi Wendy. I will have to re read your thread to fully refresh my memory,  But,  if i remember correctly…

The reason this tablet was able to be restored is because USB debugging was on.  There fore he had options. In your case i believe it's off. Your tablet will never be seen with it off. If i am remembering incorrectly and you think it's on,  charge it up and try re running the root package. See if that works for you.

With USB debugging off, you can still copy files to your internal and external sd cards. You can't install software, but you can copy it so it's ready to install. Still, if you can't boot to recovery, I don't know what might help.

well, some people can, but she can't.  she's stuck on the boot animation and the PC can't recognize her, unfortunately.......

The alternative is to install directly on the sd card, from a PC.

Yes,  if she could boot up she could do that. But her tablet won't bootup. So it can't acces the external sd card.

It doesn't matter how she puts it onto the card,  the tablet can't access it.

Would that I could do anything with the sd card. I am fairly sure that I have debugging activated but since nothing works maybe not. I have been trying tool kits,my sero was shown as nexus in the settings, but nothing has worked. It is infuriating not to be able to get any of the needed .img files into the tablet. I am glad I bought a second one,as it is fine, but I am twitching to try a custom rom,but will hold back, would break right down and cry if it went south on me.

Thanks guys.

If you think you have usb debugging on,  give it  try. It can't hurt it any!

Take the sdcard out of the tablet and put the rom you want to try onto it- an older one of the dopa roms, as the root package flashes an older version of cwm. The older version won't flash newer roms.

Then put the card back in your tablet.

Then follow the root package again.

IF debugging is on,  and you don't have a hardware problem,  it should run through the  package repairing anything it can.

Then if you're lucky you boot up! Then boot to recovery and flash that rom.

If usb debugging is off,  when the  package starts you'll see device unknown. The package can't run.

JUST TO BE SURE IT'S NOT DRIVERS:

go to device manager and delete the drivers for the sero. Do a restart of your pc.  The package will re install them.

Review the additional info doloresPark added regarding drivers. Just to rule that out. But,  i don't think it's drivers because your PC had no issues seeing you  other sero.

Major problem. Laura, I don't remember the name of the launcher you suggested but I think it did me in. The icon in the lower left that gives the access to your apps on the home screen went missing. Tried all of the buttons on the home screen, got me no where so I tried rebooting instead of power off, went from the Hisense screen to the Dopa screen and stayed there. After some time I held the power button down till it went off. Then held the power button down and the + volume down till it said recovery and stayed that way. Not knowing what to do I held the power button down till it went off then powered back on with the + button too, got the fastboot screen then it just sat there. My laptop does not see the Sero as it did when I upgraded to Lollipop. Debugging is on, the latest Philz and have done a nandroide backup but with what all that I have read, I have a brick.  :'(

Hi Art,
Sounds like your internal sd card may be corrupted. but maybe not totally. I'm not sure this will work on a Sero, but it's worth a try. When you hold the power button, hold both volume buttons down as it boots, look for something saying you are booting into safe mode. Drivers won't be loaded, but maybe you can investigate and fix the issue. You will only be able to uninstall apps. Third party app probably won't work. To get out of safe mode, just power down normally. Works on some Android devices.

I have booted into safe mode from being powered on, but you can't get there.
