Backing up and Restoring Apps and Data - Root
« on: December 01, 2013, 01:37:09 PM »
As always:  Follow my instructions at your own risk.  Root required.

These instructions use ROM toolbox Lite.  (free from google play)

install from play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.liberty.toolbox

open > you can go through the tutorial on using it if you want 'X' out when completed. > grant access

Rom toolbox swipes left and right and uses the back arrow.

From the tools screen > click App Manager >

you can watch the tutorial on how to use the app manager. > click 'X" when complete.  App manager opens to the APP page.   Here all the apps installed onto the tablet are shown, including system apps.   Clicking the "filter" icon in the top taskbar opens the window to choose what you would like to show in the list.  We will be using "all apps".

Before you make your backup you must decide where you will store the backup.  Clicking the settings up in the top right hand corner will open the window > choose preferences.

You can customize the look of your app using the UI preferences.  We are setting our preferences for the backup > scroll down to Backup Settings.  I will be setting it up to store my backup on the EX sdcard.  Click backup Folder  > your file manager should open and allow you scroll to your ex sd and select it.  I created my folder and named it app manager backup. If you have the pro version you can also select automatic backup for later when you download apps.

Use the back button go back to your apps screen.  Click the settings up in the top right hand corner to open the box again.  We're going to backup all our apps so we will choose Multi-Select.  If you just wanted to backup one APP here, you would just select the app of your choice.

Selecting "mulit-Select" activates the taskbar options for backups.  Click the icon to the left of the folder with the down arrow in it > select All.  This will choose all the apps to be backed up.  By default they will highlight.

Click the folder in the top taskbar with the down arrow to start your backup.  Choose your backup options.  I'm choosing 'backup apps and data'.

When backup is complete scroll left to access the "backup" screen.  Here you will see everything you backup.

You can now open your file manager > scroll to your EX sdcard and find the app manager folder and see your backup.

Restoring apps using ROM toolbox lite.   As always:  Follow my instructions at your own risk.  Root required.

Open the app. From the tools screen > click App Manager >  Scroll left to backups.

The filter allows you to choose the backup type you are looking for.  I usually just leave it on all.

To restore just ONE app > click the app you want to restore >  choose the function in the window that opens.

To restore more than one app or restore apps and data > click settings in the top right hand corner > choose Multi-select

Select the apps you want to restore

click the square in the toolbar if you would like to select all for restoring.

Click the ' + ' in the toolbar >  make your selection

You're done!    8)

Now you know how to backup and restore using ROM toolbox lite.  Click the thumbs up if I helped you out.  thank you!

With ROM Toolbox Lite, when backing up App+Data will it include data in various folders, such as /sdcard/tomtom and /sdcard/KingsoftOffice ?

TitaniumBackup will and has an option to only do so if the data is under xMB. I've gone off TB though, as I just had to restore 55 apps and manually click Next, Next, Install, Done for each one, which seems ridiculous, so I'm hoping that ROM Toolbox Lite will work more sensibly.

It does have a batch function.  It allows you to choose to install just apps.  Or apps and data.

TB calls it a batch function and allows you to choose just apps or apps and data as well but it still requires you to manually approve each app it's restoring.

I can't see any reason it needs to do this as surely it just needs to copy the files into the appropriate places, for either app or data and maybe require a reboot after that for it to 'see' the files. Does ROM Toolbox do this or does it require the user to manually approve each app as it's restored as well?

well, to be honest, I make apps and data backups but I never use them.  I always just use a nandroid for restoring.  And it's been ages since I have restored just apps and data.  I use ROM toolbox pro and I can't remember it ever doing what you described using TB.  You do have to use the batch function, which is different from restoring individually.   Maybe there is a batch function for TB that will eliminate the need to approve each app.

OK, thanks. I guess I'll test ROM toolbox and see what it does ;)

yes, give it a try.  I found ROM toolbox to be much easier and user friendly than TB.

Ah, it seems prompt-less restore is only unlocked in the paid-for version of TB.
