Nandroid Backups with CWM
« on: November 29, 2013, 04:52:36 PM »
Hi everyone.  Here's a tutorial on how to backup and restore with CWM.  As always, follow my instructions at your own risk.

Boot to recovery - either with an app or power off >  power button and the volume - button together until you see "recovery".

Let go of the buttons and wait for CWM recovery to load. choose backup and restore.

Choose backup to external SD.

Backup starts.  CWM will backup boot.img, recovery.img, system.img, data, apps, caches, EXsd will not be backed up. Depending on what you have installed it can take 5 mins or more.  You 'll see "backup complete!" when it's finished.

choose "go back" > Reboot System now.

wait for system to reboot.

A folder is made on the exSD named Clockworkmod.  In it is your nandroid.  It's dated and timed the date its made. To avoid errors, don't rename it. I keep a ledger of the rom associated with the date/nandroid.  If you don't have more than one nandroid it wouldn't matter.
If you wish to rename your backups BE SURE not to have any spacing in the name or it will error (md5 maybe md7) and won't flash.

You can't just make a nandroid and assume it works.  You have to test it to be sure it will work when/if you need it.

Here is my home screen :

So let's change the wallpaper and then flash/restore the nandroid to be sure it will work.  :)

Boot to recovery - either with an app or power off >  power button and the volume - button together until you see "recovery".  Let go of the buttons and wait for recovery to load.

Wipe Cache > advanced > wipe Dalvik Cache > go back

Choose backup and restore

choose Restore from external sd.  Choose Yes restore

choose your backup from the list ( if you have more than one).

Recovery will start.  It will let you know when it's completed.

Choose go back >  Reboot system now.

Yeah!  12 mins. later, back to where we started with a flashable nandroid.   8)  Keep it safe on your Ex sd card.

Thanks very much for the tutorial.  Is it possible to do a partial restore, such as /data only?

You're welcome.

Yes you can backup apps, data, apps and data.  But not with CWM.  I'll do that tutorial tomorrow or Sunday.

Would Nandroid support partial recovery? Most of time, there is no necessary to have a full restore.

Hi. Yes, nands do support partial restores.  The sero7 P has a few recoveries available.  They've come a long way since I took that photo.  We can do a lot more in recovery now. Philz and the latest versions of twrp support mounting and flashing from usb storage.
