Rooting and CWM Recovery - step by step picture guide
« on: November 22, 2013, 01:51:58 PM »
UPDATE 01/08/2015:

After following these instructions to Root and add CWM to your tablet you must update to a newer recovery if you intend on flashing the latest ROMs-as they require selinux to be enabled.  The recovery in this package will only flash the DoPa 2.0. custom rom.

I recommend Philz Recovery.  Available here, all the way down at the bottom of post #1.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709243

other recoveries with selinux enabled are available here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536116

***********************************************************************************************************

keep in mind that rooting or any other alterations a Sero 7 owner does to their tablet or operating system is done at their own risk and may void their warranty.  Also, while unlikely, it could possibly lead to the bricking of their tablet if not done correctly.  Follow my instructions at your own risk.  thanks.  :)

Hi everyone.  Here is my step by step picture guide to rooting the US Sero 7 PRO.   I am following the directions by DoloresPark, the developer.

step 1 -prerequisites:

Read the original document here: post #2  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470998

Tablet must be charged above 50% - fully charged is optimum.

Unmount your EX.SD Card. (safety precaution)

Developer options and USB debugging must be on.  ----> to turn on USB debugging.  settings > Click about tablet > click Build Number 7 times >

click the back arrow > click Developer options > turn it on in the upper right hand corner > scroll down and check USB debugging

The below is copied from developer DoloresPark.  If you have already installed the drivers for the tablet  the installation wizard will not open. They don't need to be added again.  The tablet was under "portable devices" on my PC not "other devices".  So look for one or the other.

"Windows requires USB drivers to be installed. Drivers that will work with the Sero7Pro (and possibly any Android device) are included in the package.

After enabling "USB debugging" and connecting your tablet, a wizard may pop up to guide you through the steps. If not, force it to appear by opening Device Manager. Look under "Other devices" where you should see something like "Android phone". Doubleclick on it, then select the "Install driver" button on the window that appears.

When the wizard pops up, tell it you'll select the drivers, then choose the option that tells it where to look. Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the directory where you unzipped the package. Select the usb_driver folder, press "OK", then "Next" - the drivers should install without any problems.

Notes: On Windows XP, the first wizard to pop up may want to install drivers for "MTP" which XP doesn't support. If so, cancel out of that, then wait for the "Andoid Phone" wizard to appear. On later versions of Windows, you may get a popup warning that the drivers aren't signed properly; if so, select "Install driver anyway". On Win 8-64bit, driver installation will fail unless you started the current session with "Driver signature enforcement" disabled. "

you must have an unzip tool - I use winRAR.   Directions are for windows.

Download the zip from the original document here: post#2 bottom of the page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470998

click the downloaded folder to open it.

It should open in your zip tool.  Click extract to extract the contents.

extract it to the desktop.

This is what your extracted files will look like on the desktop.

Hook your tablet up to the PC using your data cord.  REMEMBER usb debugging must be on. Tablet should be Powered on.  Screen unlocked.

click step one folder on the desktop to enable the ADB bridge - locating and allowing access to the tablet.

what you see after first clicking step 1.  ADB will search and locate the tablet:

When the tablet is located you will see the device listed in the adb box. follow the instructions on the screen and Click any key to finish step 1.

When completed, click step 2 folder on the desktop to start the root process.

again follow the instructions on the screen.

It doesn't take but a few minutes.  The actions are done for you.  If something needs to be done it will ask.  Just be patient and READ.

The tablet will reboot itself.  You will get instructions to follow.

the tablet may ask you to verify apps.  Accept.

When root in the adb box is complete you can disconnect the tablet.  Look for Super user in your apps drawer.

SU will need to update. click continue.

YEAH YOU'RE DONE!!  ;D

You will need a file manager, if you don't have one already I use ESfile explorer3.  Easy to use, IMO.  (no, not a sponsor  :-\ )

After installation of your file manager you can turn root privileges on in the app's tools.  Now that you're rooted, you will need to grant ( or not grant ) permission for certain tasks to be performed. (security feature)

Have fun customizing your new tablet.   8)

step3 CWM.  Sorry the pictures are so big.  :)  last time I thought they were a little small, so I made up for it, lol.

If you have never booted into recovery on your tablet, this is what the stock recovery looks like.  It's accessed by powering off the tablet, and restarting the tablet by holding down the power button and the volume - button at the same time,  when you see "recovery" you let go of the buttons and wait for the tablet to continue to recovery. Or you can access recovery using apps with the option to boot to recovery.  ROM toolbox is one app.  Quick boot is another.  The benefit is saving wear and tear on the buttons, and it's usually faster.

to flash CWM to the tablet click step 3 on the desktop.

(If you are flashing CWM at a separate time from step 1 and step 2 you will need to connect the tablet to the PC, then click step 1 first to start ADB.  The ADB  box will flash and close. Continue by clicking step 3. on the desktop)

It's pretty fast - less than a minute or so.

If it asks - grant super user permission

tablet will reboot.

To confirm you do have CWM > power the tablet down after it reboots.

Reboot to recovery >  power button and the volume - button together until you see "recovery".

Let go of the buttons and wait for CWM recovery to load.  This is what it looks like.

And the benefit is many more options for your use.

touching 'advanced' gives more options too.

So you're ready now to flash a custom ROM.  OH WAIT, no you're not.  You have to make a backup first!   ;)

Well done.  You might want to add a warning disclaimer in the op or as a sticky in the development board.

You're welcome everyone.  More will come as time allows. I've done several tutorials in the past. Everyone tells me they're helpful, it's less intimidating when you know ahead of time what to expect.

Yes, John,  I should have put my disclosure. I forgot. I'll add it.

To revert back:

Flash Dolores park's stock ROM. After flashing is complete, choose 'reboot system'.   When it asks 'disable flash recovery' say NO. When it asks 're root?' Say NO.

System will reboot with stock ROM, stock recovery, and no root access.

I'll be adding this later as a tutorial.

I have rooted and un rooted this tablet about 5 times over the past few months.  It's pretty easy to do. I've
used xboxexpert's package, doloresPark's package, and super one click root.

Super one click worked well for me twice when I was on a custom ROM. But won't root my tablet when I am stock.  Not sure why, didn't feel like playing around with it.  So I'll say, don't use it.  There are too many other options to take a risk.

Super one click uses and older exploit that will only work on devices set ro.secure=0 and ro.debeggable=1, ours is 1,0 respectively. Newer roots like Motochopper or Vroot work fine. Unlock Root for whatever reason is 50/50. It might be a driver issue. It is also why even once rooted we only have full ADB in shell.

Speaking of drivers. Maybe add a section at the top to install drivers manually under Windows. A lot of systems are set up where they won't automatically read the ini being added. Every thing from XP up are roughly similar so you wouldn't have to be Windows specific, just give a rough idea.
